Two people were found dead by police Thursday in an apartment near Lowe’s in Coeur d’Alene.

Police said they were called around 5 p.m. to the Falls Creek apartment complex at 2827 N. Julia St., north of Lowe’s Home Improvement Center, at the behest of neighbors who smelled a suspicious odor coming from a unit whose occupants hadn’t been seen in a while.

“When officers made entry, they found two deceased persons,” Coeur d’Alene Police Detective Jared Reneau said. “When they made sure no one else was inside, they secured the scene.”

Police did not give further details, including gender, or what may have caused the deaths.

The apartment, No. 103, a ground-floor unit on the north side of the complex, is connected to neighboring apartments through a breezeway.

As part of the initial investigation, officers taped off the area around the apartment, including a large parking lot, and waited for a search warrant.

For several hours before dark, detectives canvassed the neighborhood, talking to neighbors and anyone familiar with the occupants, or anyone who may have seen something suspicious at the apartment.

Police set up a command post on the north side of the complex near West Marie Avenue.

Yellow crime scene tape also lassoed a perimeter around a silver Subaru Outback, parked across the lot from the apartment. Police said the car likely belonged to the occupants of apartment 103, and the search warrant, once signed by a judge, would include the car and a storage unit in addition to the apartment.

Police expected officers and detectives to be on scene well into the night investigating circumstances surrounding the deaths.

No further information was released by press time.

Falls Creek is an affordable housing community that includes 168 low-income units in a modern three-story setting built in 2008, according to the apartment complex website.
