Run 2 summer, run 4 kids

SPIRIT LAKE — Nothing beats the wonderful feeling of new shoes, especially when they're given to kiddos who need them.

"To date, we have given out 109 pair of running shoes to individuals who could benefit," said Colene Hotmer, who founded Running Shoes 4kiDs in 2011 to supply athletic shoes to kids in need.

The fifth annual Running Shoes 4kiDs Run 2 Summer Fun Run is taking place at 3 p.m. Saturday at Timberlake High School. The day will include a quarter-mile run for children 4-6 years old at 3 p.m., a half-mile run at 3:30 p.m. for 7- to 10-year-olds and a 1-mile run at 4 p.m. for those 10-14.

"It is such a joy watching the littles at the starting line and all their excitement that comes along with it," Hotmer said. "Then to witness the finish, and all the emotions that come with their outstanding accomplishment of finishing their race! It is pretty awesome."

The event will also include a shoe raffle where 50 pairs of running shoes for kids and adults will be given away. Raffle tickets will be $1 each.

"After five years, I have witnessed much hope and excitement for what RS4K offers," Hotmer said. "In the same hand, (I've) witnessed people feeling uneasy in accepting a pair of running shoes, for free, even if they really need shoes. My hopes with the running shoes raffle will provide a way for many people to take home a pair of running shoes without feeling like they are taking a handout."

Individual registration is $10. Team or school registration is $50. Register at the race or online at www.runningshoes4kids.webs.com. Medals, ribbons and prizes will be awarded.

Timberlake is located at 5303 W. Highway 54 in Spirit Lake.
