Albert Henry Wellman, 91

Albert Henry Wellman, 91, of Spokane, Wash., formerly of Kellogg, Idaho, passed away May 29, 2017, at Holy Family Hospital in Spokane. He was born May 11, 1926, in Missoula, Mont. Albert was the son of Albert and Frances (Kalm) Wellman.

Albert grew up in Kellogg and graduated from Kellogg High School in 1944. He went on to attend the University of Idaho for one year and then transferred to the University of Calif., Los Angeles, where he obtained his bachelor’s degree in business in 1948.

Albert was united in marriage to Audrey Hoffman in 1949 in New York City. She preceded him in death in 1984.

Albert owned and operated Wellman Chevrolet before selling out to Dave Smith in the late 1970s; he continued to work for Dave Smith Motors until his retirement. He was always interested in how the business and its employees were doing and enjoyed visiting with the Smith family.

Albert lived in Kellogg until the mid-1980s and moved to Arizona for a time before settling in Spokane. He lived there with his daughter and son for the last 24 years where they stood by his side and cared for him lovingly while he dealt with the challenges of aging.

He enjoyed eating out, golfing, traveling, fishing, watching television, especially sports, and spending time with family. He was also very interested in the stock market and business. Audrey Wellman was a teacher at Kellogg High School for 20 years, and she and Albert were very active and involved in the schools various activities, including sporting events, chaperoning dances and attending plays and concerts at the school.

Albert is survived by his children: son Craig Wellman and daughter Janis (Larry) Oberholtzer, all of Spokane; his niece, Mary Jimenez; and nephews Steve, Bernie and Walter Dolan. He was preceded in death by his parents; his wife, Audrey; his brother, Charles Wellman and his sister, Shirley Brydon.

A funeral service will be held at 11 a.m. Tuesday, June 6, 2017, at the Kellogg Funeral Chapel, with Reverend Ken Bartle officiating. A reception will follow services in the reception center. Interment at Greenwood Cemetery in Kellogg.
