Kootenai punches back, wins opener
- FOOTBALL
HARRISON FLATS — Before Friday’s season and White Star League opener, Kootenai coach Doug Napierala warned his team not to sit around and wait to make something happen against visiting Lewis County.
Well, they did.
Then, the Warriors defended their home turf.
Gage Maitland threw for 136 yards and two touchdowns and ran for 96 yards and four touchdowns as the Warriors beat the Eagles, a co-op of Highland (Craigmont), Nezperce and Culdesac high schools.
“Before the game even started, I told them not to sit around for them,” said Napierala, whose team fell behind 14-0 before scoring 36 straight points. “And we waited. I told them (after falling behind 14-0) we’re better than we’re playing and we needed to step up. And we got things going and the boys started to believe in themselves. And the boys played a great game.”
Tristan Usdrowski caught both touchdown passes for Kootenai, which returns to action at home against Timberline of Weippe on Sept. 8.

Coeur d’Alene 33
FOLSOM, Calif. — After a slow start, the visiting Vikings did most of their scoring damage in the second half in a season-opening loss to the Bulldogs, a Northern California power in the Sacramento area.
“Folsom was real good, as we expected,” said Coeur d’Alene coach Shawn Amos, whose squad opened at Folsom for the second straight season. “Our kids played hard; we loved their attitude.”
Folsom returned the opening kickoff for a touchdown, blocked a Coeur d’Alene punt, and also took advantage of interceptions and fumbles by the Vikings.
“They’ve got a lot of athletes; they’re good everywhere,” Amos said of Folsom. “I would say they may be a little better than last year. But I loved our attitude, how the kids responded when things got bad early.”
Scoring plays and individual statistics were not immediately available.
Coeur d’Alene travels to Central Valley next Friday.
Madison 34
Lake City 10
REXBURG — The visiting Timberwolves fell into a first-half hole and couldn’t quite dig out in a loss to the Bobcats in the season opener for both.
Grant Clark carried the ball 25 times for 174 yards and a third-quarter touchdown for Lake City at Madison.
Madison took a 14-0 lead after the first quarter and scored the final 21 points of the second quarter to pull away.
“We just couldn’t stop them in the first half,” second-year Lake City coach Bryce Erickson said. “They had a big kickoff return in the second quarter and we couldn’t bounce back. The kids fought their tails off, but we just need to score more points. I was proud of our guys up front and our tight ends, they did a great job of blocking, but we couldn’t finish drives and that hurt us. I’m proud of these kids. They never gave up and fought until the end. We just need to clean up our mistakes and fundamentals.”
Lake City will face Lewis and Clark next Friday at Joe Albi Stadium in Spokane at 8 p.m.
