MONUMENTS: A sensible plan

| August 23, 2017 1:00 AM

Regarding Confederate monuments, I believe that none should reside on federal property, and no Confederate flags should fly over state institutions. “E Pluribus Unum,” we are pledged to be one nation.

As for the statues and stuff, why not leave them in place until the next scheduled state elections? Then voters can determine their disposition. If the majority wishes to remove them, the pieces in question could be auctioned off to parties who wish to display them on private property per First Amendment rights. The same democratic process could apply to cities, parks and homeowners associations. Problem solved.

Concern about the controversy extending to the Washington and Jefferson monuments seems reasonably goofy. Since slavery was accepted in Biblical times, should we burn all the Bibles?

Fortunately, moral evolution occurred between the late 1700s and the mid-1800s that finally resulted in the abolition of slavery. I don’t believe any Americans condone slavery today…I hope.

I do side with those who are protesting against all the White Alt-Right Nazi Klan excrement. Nevertheless, I think their cause would be better served if their tactics mirrored those of Martin Luther King and Ghandi. They also need to be acutely alert to any agent provocateurs in their midst, and publicly out them.

Peace must prevail. One Civil War was enough.
