Douglas Mark Magnuson, 60

Douglas Mark Magnuson, 60, of Coeur d’Alene, Idaho, passed away at his home on Aug. 3, 2017, after a strong, courageous battle with cancer, his family steadfastly by his side.

Doug was born on July 17, 1957, to Sherry Millard and Westly Magnuson Jr. at San Mateo Hospital, Calif. They later moved to Bellevue, Wash., when Doug was 18 months old. Doug’s father, Westly Magnuson, passed away when Doug was 13 years old. Doug attended Hillaire Elementary, Odle Jr. High and Interlake High School in Bellevue, Wash. Doug was very active in Boys Scouts of America where he learned many of his leadership skills and received his Eagle Scout Award. While living in Bellevue, he joined St. Peter’s United Methodist Church where he served as an acolyte and was active in youth group. He graduated from Bellevue Community College after two years. In 1980, he received his business and accounting degrees from the University of Washington, completing his CPA exams shortly thereafter.

Doug was a leader to so many both personally and professionally, always willing to help others. While in college, he worked in the warehouse at American Hospital Supply in Redmond, Wash. During his senior, year he did an internship at Arthur Young accounting firm and upon receiving his degrees, he was then hired as an accountant. Later he came to work for the Hagadone Corporation in 1987. Doug earned the position of CFO on April 1, 2007, until very recently when he was announced treasurer.

During his time at the Hagadone Corporation, Doug met the love of his life, Debbie Edinger. They would have been celebrating their 28th year of marriage on Sept. 9 of this year. One of Doug and Debbie’s favorite places to dine, not just for the food, but more importantly to share past memories and spend time together, was Ivano’s. This was also the place where Doug proposed to Debbie.

Another special spot Doug and Debbie shared together was their condo in Palm Desert. It was a relaxing place where Doug and Debbie could spend quality time together, and where they were planning to retire.

Doug has two wonderful daughters, Makayla Meyer (Jared) and Jamee Rowley (Will), and four terrific grandchildren: Colt, Caden, Avery and Braxton. His little Avery loved to have, “gampa,” do Yankee Doodle on his leg. Braxton, the recent addition to the family, looks much like his grandpa when he was a baby. Colt and Caden enjoyed talking sports and telling jokes with grandpa. Doug made sure to attend as many of his children and grandchildren’s baseball, softball, basketball or soccer games. He was their biggest fan, going as far as to check in via texts to find out scores if he wasn’t able to attend. His children and grandchildren always enjoyed their time with their father and grandfather, especially the countless times at their cabin on the lake. Doug never asked anything of anyone and always gave so much to others.

The University of Washington football team had a special role in Doug’s life. He was an avid season ticket holder, attending several UDub games over the last 35 years. The ’92 Rose Bowl was an extra special game, Doug finding out he and Debbie were going to have a child, Makayla. She would later join her father, attending the ’01 Rose Bowl. It was almost a guarantee that Doug could be found sporting the Husky purple and gold.

In Doug’s final months, he was invited to Augusta, Ga., to enjoy something he always wished to do: attend The Masters Golf Tournament. He spent a few days watching the pros play his favorite sport that he often would play Tuesday nights with friends.

One of his favorite traditions, enjoyed by Doug and all his family, was his homemade vanilla ice cream he made every Fourth of July. It was one of those very special traditions that everyone looked forward to each year.

Doug is survived by his wife, Debbie; his two daughters, Makayla Meyer (Jared) and Jamee Rowley (Will); and grandchildren: Colt, Caden, Avery and Braxton. Also mother, Sherry; sister Sandra Burns (Rob); in-laws Ron and Nancy Edinger; sisters-in-law Paula Austin (Tim) and Robin Szmania (Phil); several nieces and nephews; and a lot of great friends; and also the very important Buddy dog.

A huge thank you to Hospice of North Idaho for their amazing support to Doug and his family. All of the nurses who came to guide and care for he and his loved ones were especially kind and gentle. An extra special thank you to Lori Schneider for her obvious love of Doug and his family. She was so helpful throughout this process.

The memorial service will be held at 2 p.m. Wednesday, Aug. 9, 2017, at Yates Funeral Home, Coeur d’Alene Chapel, 744 N. Fourth St., Coeur d’Alene.

In lieu of flowers, Doug requested donations be made to Hospice of North Idaho, 9493 N. Government Way, Hayden, ID 83835.
