ART: Beliefs under attack

| August 2, 2017 1:00 AM

Ali Shute defends the grotesque caricature of Our Lady of Guadalupe at Art Spirit Gallery in an odd way. She claims that the point of art is to “create some sort of dialogue.” Defaming someone’s mother at the outset of a conversation is probably not a good way to try and establish dialogue.

She then drags out the old trope about censorship. It’s not about attacking free speech. It’s about showing respect for others’ deeply held beliefs. It’s about the common decency society depends on so that all may coexist and live in harmony.
