PREP TENNIS: Story, Plummer notch singles wins over Pullman

| March 20, 2016 9:15 PM

PULLMAN — Cassidy Story and Violet Plummer scored solid wins in singles to lead Sandpoint, but a shorthanded Bulldog girls squad fell 5-2 to Pullman on Saturday in a nonleague road tennis dual.

“Cassidy methodically destroyed Ana D’Acosta. She would repeatedly move the ball side to side until she got a sort ball, then it was lights out,” praised Bulldogs head coach Kent Anderson. “Violet moved up to No. 2 singles because we were short-handed and took on May Q’ang, who was unbeaten this year. Violet calmly neutralized May’s huge serve and forehand with her solid strokes and great anticipation. This was an impressive win.”

The Bulldogs were missing three of their top five varsity players, which meant three girls who had never played a full three set match before got a varsity trial by fire.

“You learn more from that kind of pressure than you do in a week of practice,” claimed Anderson. “We were swept in doubles but it was close. I’m really impressed with how the girls stepped-up under these difficult circumstances.”

The Bulldog boys hosted Pullman, with the Greyhounds sweeping singles to also earn a 5-2 win in the Washington dual format, which doesn’t have mixed doubles.

Jake Aguirre made his debut at No. 1 singles, losing 10-8 in a third set super-tiebreaker. Michael Favor and Matthew Curtiss won easily at No. 2 doubles, while Reilly Wolfe and Corey Diel ground out a 7-5, 7-6 win.

“Michael and Matthew’s speed almost makes winning look easy,” claimed Anderson. “Impressive win for Cory and Reilly. Reilly’s serve is becoming a very impressive weapon.”

Sandpoint boys and girls are at Lewiston on Tuesday.
