POST FALLS — Junior Wyatt Setian had three hits and drove in four runs, leading the Post Falls Trojans past the Rogers Pirates in the season opener for both schools on Friday at Post Falls High.

Post Falls took a 4-0 lead into the third inning before Rogers scored three runs in the top of the fourth inning, only to have the Trojans score nine unanswered to end the game in five innings.

“I really liked how we played,” Post Falls coach Dustin Frank said. “The kids looked comfortable at the plate and put the ball in play. We only struck out twice, which was good and we had good approaches at the plate. Defensively, we’ve got to fix a few things, but the field was in rough shape. The kids competed, but the best thing was how we responded in the bottom of the fourth inning and had that big inning to shut them down. The way we responded and tacked on some runs, taht’s what we’ll need to do to be able to compete when things don’t go our way.”

Jake Pfennigs hit a two-run double in the fourth and Setian’s two-run triple in the fifth keyed the rally for Post Falls, which plays at Pasco next Friday.

OROFINO — The visiting Tigers lost in a doubleheader to the Maniacs in the season opener for both schools.

Braxton Tonkin struck out four through 4 2/3 innings for Timberlake and drove in two runs in the first game in coach Matt George’s debut.

“We learned a lot from the first game,” George said. “Braxton threw the ball really well, but Orofino just hit the ball well and put the ball in play a lot. They kept us off balance, and for a first game, it was nice to see some quality pitching.
