ASA SOFTBALL: Xtreme earn top seed at Hillsboro tournament

HILLSBORO, Ore. — Kylie Smith went 3 for 4 with three runs scored and Martha Tooley went 2 for 3 with two doubles, helping the North Idaho Xtreme beat Absolute Blast of Seattle 8-6 in pool play to advance to the Gold Bracket of the ASA Valley Invitational as the top seed.

“We came out a little rusty today,” Xtreme coach Travis Smith said. “That last game (against the Blast), we really buckled down and wanted to make sure we were in that top bracket. That team was beating everyone in our pool and it was exciting to see our kids battle to get that win and finish that goal.”

Earlier, Kelsey Gumm struck out seven over four innings as the Xtreme beat the Washington Speed 7-2. Breana Burke had four strikeouts in three innings and Haley Loffer and Kyla Stern each had a hit in the win.

The Xtreme lost 5-4 on a walk-off hit against the Sidewinders of Portland in their other pool play game.

Play resumes today.
