MARATHON: Press wanted
On Sunday, May 29, several people ran in the Coeur d’Alene Marathon, half marathon or 5K. How many people? I don’t know. Who won? I don’t know that either. Actually, that’s not true; both questions can be answered by checking the Coeur d’Alene Marathon’s website, but not by looking in the newspaper. I was looking forward to reading some inspirational story about someone from the race. Perhaps the article would be about the winners, or maybe the ladies who ran 26.2 miles in tutus, or the girl who carried the American flag for 13.1 miles, or the grandfather who ran his 201st marathon, or the handful of new mommies who have full-time jobs and still find time to train for the half Ironman. Every day for the next week, I searched the newspaper and found nothing.
I am so disappointed that there was no coverage of the races. Going back to those training for the Ironman…maybe the key word is “Ironman.” Since the newspaper likes to report on all things Ironman (starting three weeks out), perhaps organizers needed to emphasize to the newspaper on how the race was great practice for the Ironman, which most of those athletes knew already. While it is nice to read about major league teams, it’s even better to read about something from your own hometown. So for next year, please include coverage of the Coeur d’Alene Marathon, half marathon and 5K, maybe you will inspire the next runner to create their own story.
