Kinsey Gomez

Idaho track and field

Gomez, a senior from Coeur d’Alene High, finished fourth in the 10,000-meter run in 34 minutes, 24.97 seconds in the first round May 26 in Lawrence, Kan., to advance to the NCAA Outdoor Track and Field Championships in Eugene, Ore., June 8-11. Gomez ran the second fastest final lap in the race to move up in the pack. “She just ran a very smart race, kind of ran her race,” Idaho director of track and field Tim Cawley said. “She stayed in position, then just took advantage of it. She ran really confident. It was just enjoyable to watch.”

Vanessa Shippy

Oklahoma State softball

Shippy, a sophomore from Lake City High, was named a third-team All-American selection by the National Fastpitch Coaches Association. Shippy helped Oklahoma State to the championship game of the Georgia Regional and led the Big 12 Conference in batting average .425, 58 runs scored and a .543 on-base percentage and was second in hits with 76 and third with 21 steals. “I think anytime you get an award like this in your program it’s a special day,” Oklahoma State coach Kenny Gajewski said. “These kids work so hard. She’s been so unselfish, playing three different positions (second base, center field and catcher). She’s a kid who brings it every single day. It’s special for her and her family, but it’s also very rewarding for her teammates who were in a position to help her. It’s just an all-around great award and it’s a great day for us. It adds to the history that Oklahoma State already has.”
