“We didn’t play well, but found a way to win,” said Post Falls coach Mike McLean, whose team forced 19 turnovers in the game. “Our defense and depth was what helped us pull this out. Columbia River did everything they’re supposed to do to beat us, but we were able to cause some turnovers.”

“We didn’t have a shoot-around before the game and came out in a funk,” McLean said. “I need to do a better job of preparing our team, but our guys overcame my mistake today with their defensive effort. SPOKANE VALLEY — Tauna Kirk hit a jumper with under a minute remaining and Makenzie Edinger iced it late on a free-throw, helping the Hawks top the Greyhounds in the West Valley Holiday tournament.

“We played a great first half and ended up in some foul trouble in the third quarter and lost some momentum,” Lakeland coach Steve Seymour said. “Pullman did a great job defensively, and it was anyone’s game to win late. I was really happy that the girls in green decided they wanted to win it and did a great job fighting for this one and not losing their confidence. We worked hard to make some plays, and I was pleased with how we competed.”

Edinger finished with 12 rebounds and Lauryn Cooper had 10 points and four steals for Lakeland (2-11), which plays at Priest River next Friday.

Johnson wins, Walker third at Sierra

Nevada Classic

RENO, Nev. — Lakeland junior Larry Johnson beat Steven Abbate of Central Catholic by a 5-3 decision in the 138-pound final at the 92-team Sierra Nevada Classic at the Reno Livestock Events Center.

“Larry just loves to wrestle,” Lakeland coach Rob Edelblute said. “When he’s on the mat, he’s phenomenal in all positions. He’s just so athletic and gifted, he just makes it look so easy.”

Lakeland finished fourth with 142.5 team points. Senior Jared Walker was third at 195 pounds for Lakeland, beating Joe Miller of McQueen High by a 5-2 decision. Will Edelblute beat Matthew Sanchez by an 8-1 decision in the 113-pound third-place match.

“Will and Jared both lost to champions in the semis, and could have popped into the finals,” Edelblute said. “They competed hard. To come down here, little ol’ Rathdrum and competing against some of these giant programs, I couldn’t ask for more out of these guys. To have three freshmen step up and score points, and really everyone step up and work as a team. It was great to see.”

Lakeland will face Crook County and Idaho Falls on Thursday at Columbia High in Nampa.

Del Oro won the team title with 246.5 points.
