ATHEISTS: The Christmas clash

| December 25, 2016 8:00 PM

Had to laugh at Tuesday’s article, “Christmas for Atheists.” I mean, seriously. Isn’t that like prime rib for vegetarians?

I commend staff writer Devin Heilman for her gentle way of presenting the sources’ comments and civility at this most sacred time of the year for many. However, I have a problem with atheism. It just doesn’t make sense although I agree with some of the article’s points about religion in general. But really, why besmirch the object of so much love around the world at this special time? What’s the point? I can think of some religious beliefs in this world right now more worthy of scorn.

What I thought was funny is that the sources don’t seem to have a problem with Santa Claus and Rudolph, it’s just that pesky Jesus that they’re having the problem with. And all religion aside, they can’t quite bring themselves to believe that Christ walked the Earth and was in all likelihood one of the purest souls in all of humanity. “December 25th was made up,” one source says. Probably true, it’s a symbolic calendar day, I think we can agree on that. But did this “myth” which has lasted more than 2,000 years just spring to life like those inanimate elements in the Cosmos that the atheists are so enthralled with? I mean, even the biggest skeptic has to think there’s a good chance SOMETHING went on back then that was so powerful nothing could stop the story from spreading century after century.

In my opinion, there are only two mathematical possibilities…ONLY TWO…pick one:

1. All of the Cosmos was inert, inanimate and lifeless and all of a sudden, lifeless elements and unknown forces floating through space randomly came together and sprang to life and now we have languages, super computers, space travel, particle accelerators, genetics and cars that drive themselves!

or

2. There is an Intelligence that put the entirety of the Universe into motion, possibly including and not in conflict with evolution. There is a grand purpose and design to everything in existence, the proof is everywhere you look.

I’m sorry, but while both propositions are tough to comprehend and accept and both require faith, anyone grounded in common sense and the concept of probabilities has to see that No. 2 wins the argument every time! No?

Not specifically directed at Devin, I have believed that the whole notion of atheism is a demonstration of human arrogance that believes there can be nothing superior to the self? Man has always put himself on the highest level of everything except for his belief in God. My belief is that that is one of man’s shortcomings. If we were as great as we think we are, this world would be the picture of health, happiness and fulfillment instead of home to so much misery, starvation and hostility.

What a sad commentary if this article is correct and the mess we’ve made of this planet, the pathetic use we’ve made of all the potential that has been given to us, (or that spontaneously evolved), is actually the highest pinnacle that Love, consciousness and intelligence can produce. That would be so sad…and what a sad commentary for life in general…you’re born, struggle through life and die. It’s all meaningless. My consciousness/soul won’t let me believe that.

As a spiritual but non-religious person, I’m thrilled that our country is turning back to Christmas and some of the beliefs and customs that our Founders had such high regard for. I’m glad Americans’ souls are speaking out again like they haven’t done in decades. And I’d like to wish Devin Heilman a very, very Merry Christmas and an offer of a continuance of this discussion once we’re both on “the other side.” No…really!
