SCHOOLS: A tax tip

| December 14, 2016 8:00 PM

Being seniors on a fixed income, I thoroughly agree with Monte and Bruce concerning school taxes. I too, pay a substantial amount to the schools, and I haven’t had any kids in school for 50 years, yet I still get taxed for it, like everyone else. I know that our state is going to do nothing about it, so I have a suggestion.

I don’t know anyone who could not live pretty well on $9 million. So here it is. Why not take a million right off the top for every $10 million won on the lottery? I remember years ago that someone said that the schools would get some money from it, but it seems it is not there or very little is going to the schools today. I saw on Friday that the lottery is $83 million for Powerball and $43 million for the Megamillions. You can’t tell me that the schools would not get a lot of use from the millions that they would get from that. Oh yes, with the stipulation that 100 percent of the money would go to the “SCHOOLS,” not some pay checks for the superintendents and principals. The state can pay for them.

If the schools were supported by the lottery, and not our tax dollars, there would be more money for us citizens to spend. The state would still get their tax money, just from a different source. Seems like a win-win situation to me.
