| December 11, 2016 9:00 PM

SPOKANE VALLEY — Lakeland’s Larry Johnson (138 pounds) and Jared Walker (195) brought home individual titles to help the Hawks finish second in the 20-team Inland Empire Classic on Saturday at Central Valley High.

“The kids battled hard,” said Lakeland coach Rob Edelblute, whose team celebrated its highest finish at the event since winning the team title in 1989. “It was a tough tournament and everyone left everything on the mat out there. It was great to see them step up and just how much they’ve matured over the last year.”

Alex Edelblute (106) and William Edelblute were runners-up in their respective classes for Lakeland, which finished with 178.5 points. Mead won the the tournament with 252.

“There was some really close matches,” coach Edelblute said. “If they do well here, they’ll do well in our state tournament.”

Casey Randles (195) and Alex Marshall (220) were also champions for Coeur d’Alene, which finished fifth with 121.5 points.

“We were down three guys, so to place fifth with 11 guys, I thought we competed really well,” Coeur d’Alene coach Jeff Moffat said. “Casey is just a machine and was attacking non-stop and never really gave his guy a chance to rest. Alex continued to get better as the tournament went on. He’s a big, strong kid and he’s making his way there.”

Coeur d’Alene, Lake City and Kellogg will wrestle at Lakeland on Wednesday.

Most teams from the Inland Empire Classic will compete at the annual Tri-State Invitational this Friday and Saturday at North Idaho College.
