BELLEVUE, Wash. — Former Lake City High standout Cierra Dvorak had 14 points, seven rebounds and five assists for North Idaho College in a 66-65 win over the Everett Trojans in the opening round of the Bellevue Classic on Friday at Bellevue College.

NIC led by 22 points in the second half before Everett ralled to get it to a one possession game in the fourth quarter.

“We started out really good, and by the second and third period, started to play some good basketball,” NIC women’s coach Chris Carlson said. “We really came out of Thanksgiving break well, and then it just kind of snowballed quickly. It was kind of like the harder we tried, the worse it got. For a young team like ours, we need to work on finishing the game.”

NIC (3-2) will face Umpqua in the semifinals at 5 p.m. today. Everett will face Skagit Valley in a consolation game today at 1 p.m.

Cardinal trio win matches at

Cliff Keen invite

LAS VEGAS — Bryson Beard (133 pounds), Trey Meyer (165) and Alex Aguilar (174) all won matches for the Cardinals, but failed to advance to today’s second day of competition at the 35th annual Cliff Keen Invitational at the Las Vegas Convention Center.

Each of NIC’s other competitors went 0-2 in the tournament, which features Division I, Division II, NAIA and NJCAA schools.

“Some of the guys were outmatched, but came away with some great experience,” NIC coach Pat Whitcomb said. “Now they’ll get a catch to watch those guys and learn from what went wrong. You always want to win, but to put it in perspective, some of these guys are true freshmen and you want to take something positive from this.”

NIC will host Eastern Oregon next Friday.
