“I thought defensively we did a good job of taking away the dribble penetration and taking away some things,” Post Falls coach Mike McLean said. “The guys did a good job of getting in the right spot defensively and taking away some things. Overall, I was happy with how we played defensively. It was pretty new for most of our guys, but it was a good start.”

SPOKANE — Containing 6-foot-9 Tanner Groves and 6-5 Andreas Brown proved to be a big task for the visiting and shorthanded Vikings, who fell in their season opener.
Groves, who has signed with Eastern Washington, scored 12 of his 14 points in the first half. Brown scored a game-high 17, including 8 of 11 from the free-throw line. Kylan Kelly hit three of Shadle Park’s seven 3-pointers, and finished with 11 points.
“They have a tough team,” said Tony Hanna, the former Timberlake coach making his debut at Coeur d’Alene. “You spend so much time trying to contain Groves, but they shoot it real well from the outside.”
Joey Naccarato led Coeur d’Alene with 14 points, and Kale Edwards added 11. The Vikings were missing starting point guard Brody Lundblad and key reserve Caleb Beggerly due to injuries.
Coeur d’Alene trailed by three at halftime, before Shadle (2-0) pulled away late in the third quarter, keyed by a pair of 3s from Kelly.
“I saw a lot of good things,” Hanna said. “I thought we battled.”

Vikings beat Borah,
fall to Meridian
BOISE — Casey Randles (195 pounds), Dom Jessos (98), Payton Keough (138) and Max Peressini (145) went unbeaten on the night for the Vikings in season-opening duals with the Lions and Warriors at Borah High.
Coeur d’Alene beat Borah 47-33 after losing to Meridian 51-33.
“We wrestled really well in both duals,” Coeur d’Alene coach Jeff Moffat said. “We were in the match against Meridian, but just couldn’t stay off our backs. We made a lot of first match mistakes, but a lot of these guys were wrestling their first varsity match. The older guys did what they were supposed to do, but we’ve got a lot of stuff to work on and eliminate the mistakes. We need to eliminate the pins, but we did pretty well. We’ve got plenty of time to get in shape and eliminate the mistakes.”
Coeur d’Alene competes in the Bucks Bags duals tournament today starting at 9 a.m. at Capital High in Boise.
