NIC ROUNDUP: Cook-Cox lifts Cardinal women

| August 28, 2016 9:00 PM

SPRINGFIELD, Ore. — Sophomore Jocelyn Cook-Cox scored from 30 yards out in the 84th minute as the North Idaho College Cardinals beat the Bellevue Bulldogs in the opener for both schools in the Northwest Athletic Conference Fall Sports Festival at the Willamalane Sports Complex on Saturday.

“The game was a fairly typical early season game,” NIC coach Dan Hogan said. “Both teams made some mistakes and had trouble stringing many passes together in order to build an attack. I think we created more good chances than Bellevue, but we didn’t hit a good touch or the last pass was poor.”

Tiegan Horton had five saves for NIC, which faces Clark College today at noon. Clark finished second in the South Region last season.

First half — none. Second half — 1, NIC, Jocelyn Cook-Cox (unassisted), 84:00.

Shots on goal — NIC 8, Bell 6.

Saves — NIC, Tiegan Horton, 5; Bell, Mikaela Powers, 4.

SPRINGFIELD, Ore. — At the NWAC Fall Festival at Willamalane Sports Center, North Idaho College took a 2-0 halftime lead on Everett, before the Trojans scored two goals late to tie the game, in NIC’s season opener.

“At the end of the first half, we felt lucky to be up 1-0, they had chances to tie it at halftime,” NIC coach Ken Thompson said. “We outshot them 17-8. We had four opportunities inside of 12 yards. Kobe Murphree had one that the keeper got his body in front of it, we had a couple others that bounced around a bit and just couldn’t put them away.”

Muganza Katanga opened the scoring by putting away a rebound off Everett goalkeeper, off a crossing pass by Alec Maldonado, in the eighth minute of the game. Garrett Flolo followed with another goal for the Cardinals in the 46th minute, on a free kick that deflected into his path, for the two-goal lead.

But Everett answered right back, on an unassisted goal by Ariaan Cardenas in the 62nd minute, before Cardenas struck again in the 70th.
