“Banana and bubblegum please,” announces Quin, my youngest granddaughter when asked what type of flavoring should top her shaved ice. I ask for grape and pink lemonade as the line behind us lengthens waiting for Rory to decide. “Grape and blueberry,” Quin’s big sister decides with a smile in anticipation of the cold refreshment on this hot summer day. Both girls, cooled by the ice beg, “Can we ride the rides now?” It’s fair time in North Idaho.

Workplace costs from illness or injury
Illness and injuries cost more than just medical bills. Costs to employee, employer, family and social life too. The costs of lost productivity, errors, loss of quality of work, goods or services, management interventions, co-worker or employer dissatisfaction, etc. results in billions of dollars every year!

NONPROFITS: Better oversight needed

As early as age 12, he washed cars at a car dealership and worked in a bakery to help support his mother while she was becoming a nurse. When he was 16, his mother married Leland (Lee) Gregg. Lee was the father he never had and he was a very important part of his life.
SIMS: End Press persecution
It amazes me that the Coeur d’Alene Press feels an obligation to repeatedly report on a traffic ticket concerning State Rep. Kathy Sims. She has been an extremely generous member of our community as well as a successful businesswoman who has received national recognition for her expertise in the automotive industry. The Press has inaccurately reported the incident with inference of impropriety and my question is “Why?” As with all incidents, there are two sides to the story.

How accurate is Old Farmer's Almanac?
Weather or Not
It’s been brought to my attention from a number of weather enthusiasts and readers about the recent prediction from the original Old Farmer’s Almanac. Their winter forecast calls for snowier and milder than normal for us residents in North Idaho and surrounding regions. They also foresee snowy weather for much of the extreme northern U.S. with drier than normal conditions across the rest of the West, most of the central U.S. and parts of the Southeast. This would mean that drought conditions in California will continue.

STRANDED: Bad job, Press
Shame on the Coeur d’Alene Press for misusing the front page of the paper to unjustly vilify the Kootenai County Sheriff’s Office. The initial, poorly reported article about the stranded boaters on Lake Coeur d’Alene printed on Saturday, Aug. 20 raised more questions than it answered. The paper crassly abused the relative inexperience of the 20-year-old boater to create an attention grabbing headline in order to sell papers whilst maligning the KCSO. Why were so many pertinent details omitted from the original story? Why was there no comment from the parents on board who presumably have more experience? Even if the staff writer lacks the sagacity to ask such basic questions of the boaters, as editor, surely you should know better.

County, this is no time for a meltdown
Well, it’s that time of year again here in Kootenai County. City and county governments have had the mold cast for their respective budgets and are now just waiting for public hearings before another year of government starts to take life again on Oct. 1. Not surprisingly, many people like me are not happy that taxes are going to go up. Many, if not most, public officials are straining under the weight of public pressure concerning their budget decisions while continuing to provide the services that the public demands. Kootenai County officials feel that pressure as well.

Health and fitness technology
Technology is a blessing and a curse — most of you would likely agree with this idea. From a health and fitness perspective, technology can be a blessing giving you tools and motivation to track your progress to a healthier life. Technology can also be a curse, delivering limited accuracy in the metrics it provides, distracting you from quality life moments with loved ones, and it becomes an intrusive crutch distracting you from day-to-day tasks.

GOP: Sad transformation
As a young and conservative college-educated voting millennial, I am appalled at the way the GOP has changed over the last few years. This party no longer reflects the traditionally conservative values of smaller government, deference to state’s rights, and fiscally responsible policy that venerates free-market capitalism. Instead, this party has shifted to reflect extreme and frankly offensive views of what American conservatism is that have been perpetuated through fear mongering in the media.
STRANDED: Deputies declined aid
I read the article Tuesday and wanted to say what I knew of the situation. I received a call from Tyler Hinton around 8 p.m. because his boat was floating and dead in the water near Higgins Point. He told me that he had called 911 and Lake City Marine for a tow but they couldn’t afford to have Lake City Marine to tow them. So I headed to town to get a boat to tow them to the boat launch at Higgins Point.

TRUMP: Better than Hillary
After reading the three articles written by Uyless Black, I commend him on his research abilities on Donald Trump. However, to put things into perspective, I challenge him to follow up on a research article on Hillary Clinton. “What difference does it make?” (that four men in Benghazi were murdered) and ongoing lies (telling the wives untruths about the event), her proven record of illegally using a private server with classified information, and the list that goes on and on.

Your TMJ and snoring
Snoring is a major symptom of obstructive sleep apnea (OSA). And when daytime tiredness is also present with snoring OSA is almost guaranteed to be present. For a person who has OSA, breathing stops for periods of 10 seconds or longer repeatedly during the night. This interrupts the normal progression of sleep through the five stages of sleep. If the interruptions happen five times or more per hour, the patient is diagnosed with OSA. Many people don’t know that these interruptions occur and last as long as a minute and a half.

How the mighty have fallen. A nation conceived in liberty and justice for all, whose very conception was acknowledged as by the grace of God. A nation born of war who wanted nothing but peace. By following the precepts of the Bible you achieved greatness. You became the most prosperous and mighty nation in the history of the world. You loved righteousness and mercy, yet you also demanded justice. You became the peace keeper of the world, helping others to achieve liberty as well. You paid the price for liberty in the blood of brave, noble warriors fighting for your ideals. You shared your wealth with the poor of the world. You truly were “One nation, under God.”

Lost and found and Facebook
After last week’s Main Street column on unintended consequences of a Facebook post, I received an email from reader John Thurston, a Realtor with Windermere Coeur d’Alene Realty. His tale of the reach of Facebook is the stuff of legends. John has been on Facebook for several years, often posting things that showcase North Idaho. He says it’s a great way to connect with potential buyers all over the world.

Barbara Ann Esser, 72, passed away with family by her side on Aug. 15, 2016, at Kootenai Health in Coeur d’Alene, Idaho, following a short illness. Barbara was born Sept. 1, 1943, to parents Robert and Francis Harry.
STRANDED: Event review needed
After reading “Stranded,” my wife and I felt alarmed by the experience of the Krous family on Lake Coeur d’Alene, and appalled by the 911 dispatcher’s reported crass and indifferent responses to their plight. The dispatcher’s responses, besides being rude, projected a level of indifference for human life that should automatically disqualify him/her from serving in that position.
Long-lived peoples drink a form of distilled water
Some years ago, in some acting circles in Hollywood, I worked with Jack Linkletter, son of the famous Art Linkletter. He related to me how his father had commissioned a Nebraska Optometrist, Allen Banik, who, as a hobbyist, pursued the provocative study of old age, to go to the remote land of the Hunzakut people. The little-known people of Hunza live in a remote high area of the Himalaya mountains in a valley bordered by Pakistan, Russia and China. These people who, in 2,000 years of almost complete isolation, seemed to have evolved a way of living, eating, thinking and exercising that has substantially lengthened their life-span and dramatically reduced their susceptibility to most of the illnesses to which “civilized” people are prone. With their methods of agriculture and soil conservation, their population enjoyed a high percentage of people living to the healthy age of 110-120 years. Some have been reputed to live to 140 years. Women commonly bear children at 50 years of age and men are working in the fields at 90 to 100 years old. Age is highly respected within the Hunzakuts. Young people look up to the senior citizens for their experience. The respect for elders is instilled in children at a very early age.
When pain is a pain
Nobody likes pain, but without this important communication tool, we’d be in big trouble. Pain is an alert system letting us know that something is wrong. Whether it is warning us that we are touching a hot stove and will get burned, or an organ that is in trouble sending out its red flag telling us there is some internal threat going on that needs attention, we’d best heed the warning. But when it is unrelenting, it can be a pain to have pain because it inhibits us in our life.

The cost of 2-hour 'free' parking
Government occasionally thinks of a brilliant idea, talks it up, and then enacts legislation, sending it on its way like a proud parent watching a child riding his bike for the first time. Unlike that parent, however, government too often turns its back and walks off, never bothering to check whether or not the kid is doing well.

STRANDED: Some key questions
About STRANDED in the Saturday Aug. 20 Press. In the article you did not mention what was wrong with your boat. Mechanical failure, blown engine or just ran out of gas? Most of these problems can be avoided by proper and regular maintenance. I noticed in your picture only one of the children was wearing a PFD. Most important, where was your paddle? In case of emergency a paddle or two will get you back to shore.
Trump not alone on big narcissism stage
For the second article in this series, it will be helpful in our analysis of Trump’s narcissism to compare his behavior to a former U.S. President who was noted for his narcissism: Theodore (Teddy) Roosevelt. This man was vain, self-important, egoistic, and bombastic. His narcissism is rated second in the Pew study (see Tuesday’s article). Roosevelt loved slaughtering bison and other vulnerable critters on a mass scale, once bragging that a “beast” he had wounded (a rhinoceros) that was charging him had “meant mischief.” Meant mischief? Yes, after being ambushed with a gun, most creatures would react with “mischief.” Like many vain-glorious people, Teddy often looked at situations only from his point of view.
Fueling for optimization
When you are a competitive athlete, highly trained and highly motivated like everyone else in your event, what can push you beyond your competitors is diet. According to Leslie Bonci, MPH, RD, CSSD, LDN, sports nutritionist for the Pittsburgh Pirates, Toronto Blue Jays and Kansas City Chiefs, nutrition can make a good athlete great or a great athlete good. Athletes spend a lot of time on their external equipment—helmet, pads, shoes, uniforms, gloves etc., but they don’t spend enough time on the internal equipment that keeps players on the field not on the bench. That internal equipment is what they eat.

Unfair to the Fair: Much ado about audits
As a certified public accountant, a longtime Fair supporter and patron, and now — as of Wednesday — a member of the finance committee for the Fair, I am again frustrated to see the term ‘forensic audit’ in a headline or an article involving the Fair, the Board of County Commissioners, and the County Clerk. I liken it to yelling fire in a crowded movie theater in terms of the gravity of audits. So what is the difference in a financial statement audit, an internal audit, and a forensic audit? And what does this mean to in terms of the Fair and its financial soundness? Let’s take a look:

My 91-year-old father just returned from a week of fishing at a remote cabin on the Alaskan coast with some dear friends. When he’s not off traveling, he spends 8-plus hours a day working in his 4-acre yard, keeping up his masterpiece flower and vegetable garden/orchard, chopping and stacking wood, and even came to my rescue with his chainsaw when a huge fir tree fell across my driveway last winter.

This letter is in response to an article in The Press about the review of the Idaho faith-healing exemption. I write in support of ADA county prosecutor Jean Fisher’s effort to protect the individual rights of Idaho children. I commend Gov. Butch Otter for instigating a review of the unconstitutional state law.

FAITH-HEALING: Lawmakers must end 'barbaric practice'
A legislative committee is reviewing our state’s faith-healing exemption law. In the year or so that this review will require, more innocent children will die because their parents denied them access to routine medical care that would have saved them from death. All in the name of so-called religious freedom. Religious beliefs belong to the parents of these children. The children are innocent victims. We need to demand that our representatives act to end this barbaric practice. There is no excuse for the deaths of these innocent children.

TRUMP: Don't trust the Clintons
My husband and I went to see the movie “Hillary’s America.” We were blown away by all the information we received! Dinesh D’Souza from India acted as well as directed it and did a terrific job I must say. Whether your Republican or Democrat you owe it to yourself to be completely informed as to who you vote for this coming election and after you see it you will know how corrupt our government is and how it got that way. And if your still not sure, go to YouTube and do a search on Bill and Hillary Clinton! These two will do anything to get in the White House again and as far as the “polls” go they are just as corrupt, I recently found out from a very informed friend of mine that when they take a “poll” they interview 100 Republicans and 150 Democrats and then post the “polls” that Hillary is in the lead and Trump is trailing how corrupt is that? Like I said before they will do anything to gain the White House, vote for Trump he is honest, he pays his own way, he will not take bribes, he tells it like we want to tell it and he will turn this corrupt system into a victory for the United States of America! Don’t let the CLINTONS FOOL YOU! VOTE TRUMP! DO YOUR RESEARCH! And don’t just listen to the “media” which is another corrupt story!

Are you suffering from male menopause?
Male menopause, more correctly called “andropause” is on the rise. Also referred to as grumpy old man syndrome, hypogonadism, irritable male syndrome and hypotestosteronism, andropause effects about 30 percent of healthy men before the age of 50 and 50 percent of healthy men greater than 60 years old. Beginning around 30 years of age, male testosterone levels drop about 10 percent per decade. Androgen (hormone) levels fall as well. In many cases, this decline is more rapid, showing as early as age 40.
Good, bad choices we make matter
I’ve been thinking a lot today. What allows one to have a privileged life while another suffers daily? Why might I miss home when I sleep in my own bed every night? What makes me giggle when my wife enters the living room in the morning with a cute dance and an, “I love you?” How much of life will I be allowed to inhale as I reach middle-age and inch closer to my demise? Why does my stomach knot in gleeful anticipation when I know my daughter and granddaughters are coming over for the day? This rollercoaster of thought makes me feel alive!

My favorite topic was the failure of the Christian right to help the poor. I must admit I began to look around the church and wonder, am I insulting them? How many around me am I writing about?

REFORM: Thanks, but no thanks
I have been hearing the word “reform” so much lately — it appears to be a favorite of liberals and the far left and I suspect, most Democrats are OK with it. It seems to have started about eight years ago. I believe Barrack Hussein Obama used it heavily in his first campaign and it was very effective — he became president — and our country and the world changed in a way that we could never envision, even in our worst nightmares. Now as I listen to Hillary and Bernie — again — it is all about “reforming” our country — the rich have become even richer and the poor are “entitled” (where did that word ever come from? Must have been a liberal — they use it a lot!) to some of that wealth. Never mind that most of those rich folks have been working their tails off — for forever. And never mind that the top 20 percent already pay about 80 percent of all taxes and the bottom 50 percent pay no taxes at all and are recipients of much of that taxed income. I’ve got news for President Obama, Hillary and Bernie — they are right, the rich are NOT paying their fair share — they are paying FAR MORE than their fair share. How about letting some of that 50 percent have a little skin in the game. Then maybe all of this free stuff would come partially out of their pockets and not all out of mine! Oh, I know, I didn’t really earn it anyway. Someone else did it for me!

Another 'heat dome' may be headed our way
Weather or Not

On Friday, July 22, the National Weather Service reported on that particular day, it was the hottest during the same period in 2012. The big ridge of high pressure that’s been causing all the tremendous heat was actually bigger than the one four years ago that brought tremendous heat and humidity to much of the U.S.
