ELECTION: It's pretty simple

| November 15, 2015 8:00 PM

About the Nov. 5 article in The Press concerning campaigns and election. It was stated that “The election ended up serving as a referendum on the value of the community’s urban renewal agency, ignite cda.” Sandy Patano said, “The election was a good indicator about how a majority of citizens feel about the overall direction of the community and its elected leadership. Voters confirmed that they approved of public projects promoted by local government and supported by taxpayers.”

Mayor Widmyer said, “I think voters came out and voted for candidates who believe that urban renewal is a good (economic) tool, something that could move our community forward.” Eden Irgens said, “I do feel this was the community showing confidence in urban renewal.”

These comments seem to me to be nothing more than political extrapolation and wishful thinking. Coeur d’Alene’s population was around 48,717 as of 2014. The Edinger/Schindelbeck vote was a total of 4,690. The Adams/English vote was a total of 4,447. These totals hardly represent a majority of eligible voters! This wasn’t a mandate for ignite cda. It was a vote from people who were satisfied with one incumbent and dissatisfied with the other.

Way to go, Ron, and welcome back, Dan.
