CHURCH: The truth still matters
What do anti-Semitism and homosexual abuse of young boys have in common? Your guess is as good as mine, as Mr. Cole never tells us in his sad excuse for journalism on the front page of the Nov. 3 Press. After the strange headline, he presents a mish-mash of innuendo, allegation and good old-fashioned mud-slinging, with re-cycled filth from the often discredited SPLC.
Decades ago, at the University of Texas, I loved seeing the prominently etched words of Our Lord Jesus Christ on the Journalism building: “You shall know the Truth and the Truth shall make you free.” The College of Journalism clearly understood that journalism exists to bear witness to the Truth. How far we now seem removed from that sublime message.
One wonders how “articles” such as Mr. Cole’s now pass for responsible journalism. Apparently, he was too busy to conduct investigative journalism. Through a visit to Immaculate Conception Church, he would find, as I have over the last two decades, a vibrant traditional Catholic community, of people just trying to save their souls and those of their children: no anti-Semites, nor even anti-Semitic sermons or literature. For a “breakaway” group, it might surprise Mr. Cole to see a portrait of Pope Francis I in the vestibule.
The Coeur d’Alene Press knows it is difficult to wash off the mud of innuendo and aspersion! We all have to live together here: the Patricks, the Coles, the Ambrosettis. Is this what we want for North Idaho? Uncharitable groundless name-calling? Shame on you!
