Ice cream anniversary cause for celebration
Baby books of yesteryear were like blogs are today for young mothers. In practiced penmanship, small details of baby’s first everythings were documented with love.
In August, Mary Jackson’s namesake granddaughter, Mary Hogan, visited from Boise to spend time with her at Garden Plaza. During the visit, Mary the younger discovered her grandmother’s baby book and they had great fun reading the entries.
One entry dated Nov. 2, 1936, when Grandma Mary was just 7 months old, chronicled her first taste of ice cream at a birthday party and that she liked it. So granddaughter Mary promised her grandmother she’d come back and celebrate the 79th anniversary of that first taste of ice cream.
On Sunday, Mary drove up to Coeur d’Alene from Boise and on Monday, Nov. 2, she and her mother, Kathleen Tillman, took Grandma Mary to Dockside for lunch and a Gooey ice cream sundae.
A promise kept and three generations making a new and most wonderful memory.

Wednesday morning quarterbacking in the wake of the election now begins in earnest. I file this column several hours before the polls close on Tuesday, so I can only hope that today we’re not reading headlines about record low voter turnout.
Off or odd year elections don’t have the big offices and issues on the ballot, but there’s no small election. I’m grateful to live in a country where citizens can run for office, and we can go to our neighborhood polling place and cast a vote without fear of retribution or death. I'm also grateful that there are citizens willing to put their names on a ballot and endure the rigors of campaigning — all for the responsibility of serving in public office.
As the dust settles, it’s also my hope that rhetoric takes a back seat to the actual representation of the citizenry that all who have been elected now represent. Anyone who’s been entrusted to serve has been bestowed a responsibility to lead.
