TOURNEY: Generosity, hard work at Avondale

Avondale Golf Course hosted the 5A State Golf Championship May 9-12. I have been to 11 state golf championships. The two times Avondale hosted the tournament (in 2010 and 2015) they were touted as the best state championships ever. This is due to the tremendous generosity and hard work by all of the people involved. I would like to thank several people and recognize their efforts in making this another great tournament.

First and foremost, I would like to thank Avondale President Mark Heckel, the Avondale Board of Directors and the Avondale membership for not only graciously hosting the event, but for the several members who volunteered to be group scorers for five-plus hours each day of the tournament.

I would also like to thank Dan Porter and Taylor Porter, for the countless hours they invested in to make this run so smoothly. On Sunday before the tournament, Dan and his staff put on the Big Break Challenge with four different golf skills contests. More than $1,000 was donated for prizes in this challenge. A special thank you goes to Jim Robson and Cory Wilson at Avondale Dental for donating $500 to this challenge. Also donating to this challenge was Mike and Lisa Callahan, Rob Hainline and Dan Porter. This was a fun activity for the golfers before the serious challenge of the tournament.

A final thank you goes to all those who volunteered their time to be scorers for the tournament. More than 30 people each day volunteered to score and marshal. We couldn't have done this without the support of so many members of our community.
