EXERCISE: Judd gets it right for all

| May 22, 2015 9:00 PM

I am writing to thank Judd Jones for his excellent column “Too Old To Exercise? Not Really.” I am becoming proof of what he talks about.

Three months ago, at age 59 1/2, I decided to get back into shape for the rest of my life. I started doing cardio six days a week and weight training 2-3 times a week, with great results. I’ve lost 26 pounds while restoring muscle tone and keeping my high blood pressure in check. I now eat healthy, cutting out carbs such as bread, pasta and junk food. I feel a lot better at 6 feet tall and 200 pounds than I did at 226. I want to see how 190 feels.

Giving up some of the foods I used to love and getting back into cardio shape have been much easier than I’d thought they would be. My journey began when I read the excellent book “Younger Next Year” by Crowley and Lodge. I’ve been encouraged along the way by a great trainer, my wife and friends. My goal is to compete in the half Ironman in Racine, Wis., my hometown, in 2016. I have not felt this good in decades.

I encourage all readers “north of 50” to follow Judd’s advice. You’ll be glad you did.
