USDA - Forest Service, Idaho Panhandle National Forests Bonners Ferry Ranger District Boundary County, Idaho Opportunity to Object - Hellroaring Project Mary Farnsworth, Forest Supervisor of the Idaho Panhandle National Forests has prepared an environmental assessment (EA), draft decision notice (DN) and finding of no significant impact (FONSI) for the Hellroaring Project. She has decided to implement Alternative 2 as analyzed in the EA. The Hellroaring Project would conduct a variety of forest resource management and restoration activities on National Forest System lands within and around the Hellroaring and Little Hellroaring Creek drainages within the Bonners Ferry Ranger District. The project area is located on the south side of U.S. Highway 95 about 4 linear miles southwest of Eastport, Idaho and the U.S.-Canada border. The project area boundary encompasses about 9,600 acres within all or portions of T64N, R1E, Sections 1 - 3, 11 - 13; T65N, R1E, Sections 35 and 36; T65N, R2E, Sections 28 - 34;T64N, R2E, Sections 3 - 9, 16 - 18, Boise Meridian. The selected alternative would include forest restoration actions including vegetation management and fuel reduction activities, as well as activities to manage noxious weeds, roads, motorized trails, big game forage, fish passage, and scenery. The project plans vegetation treatments on a total of about 2,765 acres. The treatments include seed tree and shelterwood treatments, group selection treatments, and precommercial thinning. Commercial timber harvest would be accomplished using ground-based systems, skyline yarding (or a combination of the two), and helicopter yarding. Precommercial thinning would involve using chainsaws by hand. Planned road activities include road reconstruction and maintenance on about 30 miles of existing roads. No new road construction or road decommissioning is planned. Road storage involving culvert removal is planned on approximately 5 miles of road spurs and some old brushed-in roads are proposed to be converted to ATV or motorcycle trails. For details, please refer to the complete EA, DN/FONSI, and supporting documentation, which are available on the Idaho Panhandle National Forests website at: http://www.fs.fed.us/nepa/nepa_project_exp.php?project=40785 The documents are also available at the Bonners Ferry Ranger District, 6286 Main Street, Bonners Ferry, Idaho, 83805.
