2A DISTRICT 1-2 TOURNAMENT

OROFINO - Bryant Asbury smashed a three-run home run in the second inning to give the St. Maries an 8-1 lead, and the Lumberjacks held on to beat the second-seeded Orofino Maniacs 14-9 in the championship game of the 2A District 1-2 tournament on Wednesday.

With two outs and bases loaded in the first inning, Casey Nelson hit a double to clear the bases in first inning for a 3-0 lead.

Nelson (6-0) also got the win as a pitcher, lasting five innings.

St. Maries (12-5) opens the state 2A tournament next Thursday at 9 a.m. PDT at Rodeo Park in Nampa against the third-place team from District 3 (Boise).

"We were able to score some runs and send them off at the end," St. Maries coach Craig Tefft said. "It was a good district tournament for us. We played well defensively and our kids did a good job running the bases and we found a way to win a championship."

St. Maries also beat Kendrick 18-2 in the opening round. Chase Truscott and Matt Smith were the top hitters.

Five Lumberjacks were selected to the all-Central Idaho League team on Wednesday. Issac Walters was voted MVP of the league. Asbury, Nelson, Smith and Truscott were also named to the team.

4A REGION 1 TOURNAMENT

RATHDRUM - Jared McDaniel and Dalton Strong had two RBIs each and Kenny Cooper struck out four as the top-seeded Lakeland Hawks beat the second-seeded Sandpoint Bulldogs 11-0 in a loser-out game in the 4A Region 1 tournament on Wednesday at Gorton Field.

Lakeland (11-11) travels to Moscow on Saturday at noon for the championship game. Lakeland, which lost 2-1 to Moscow last Saturday in Rathdrum, will need to beat the Bears twice to advance to the state 4A tournament starting next Thursday at Bishop Kelly High in Boise.

"Kenny Cooper pitched fantastic today," Lakeland coach Jason Bradbury said. "He threw 71 pitches, with 50 being strikes, and kept the ball down in the zone. He also changed speeds very well, which kept Sandpoint off balance most of the night. We hit the ball very well tonight up and down the lineup. It was really nice to see my team play on all cylinders."

Sandpoint finishes 10-13.

Lakeland won three of four games against Moscow during the regular season.

"We can do it," said Bradbury, whose team finished as runner-up in last year's state tournament. "We just have to take it one game and one pitch at a time and not focus on anything else. We need to play our game and concentrate on what our strengths are."
