PREP GOLF: Coeur d'Alene girls, Lewiston boys win regionals
- 5A Region 1 tournament
HAYDEN LAKE - Emily Callahan shot a 88, Kealy McMurray a 98 and Kendra Pasco finished with 99, leading the Coeur d'Alene girls to the team win at the 5A Region 1 tournament held Monday at Avondale Golf Club.
Ben Gleason shot 73 for boys medalist honors, and paced the Lewiston boys team to the title with a team 307.
Alex Callahan carded a 78 and Paul Freeman an 83 for Coeur d'Alene, which tied with Lake City, behind the consistent Tyler Azevedo (82), Beau Beasley (83), Austin Quant (88) at 342.
The Viking boys were victorious over the Timberwolves in a playoff for the third and final team spot, advancing Coeur d'Alene to state, which will also be held at Avondale next Monday and Tuesday.
Colton Serdahl shot 76, and Drew Harris and Ty Brearley each carded 78s for second-place Post Falls, which moves on to state with regional champ Lewiston, which won by four shots.
"We can definitely clean up some things for state," Post Falls coach Maria Kostina said. "All in all we did pretty well, nothing spectacular. Last year we didn't make it to state and this year we are going to state, and that was the most important thing - no matter how bad things were going, we hung in there and we made it."
On the girls side, the Vikings teamed for a 389, beating Lewiston and Lake City, who tied at 419, by 30 strokes. All three teams advance to state at Avondale next week.
"The girls did a good job," Coeur d'Alene coach Bryan Duncan said. "They didn't have their best day, but they did enough and grinded out a win."
Emily Dodge carded a 87 and Aiden Young a 95 to lead Lake City.
Maddi Anderton shot a 92 and was the lone individual qualifier from Post Falls (429).

Hawks boys, girls sweep regional
POST FALLS - Preston Roth shot a 2-under 73, good for medalist honors to lead the Lakeland Hawks to the boys title at the 4A Region 1 tournament held at The Links.
Lakeland shot 307, 20 shots better than Sandpoint, which beat Lakeland for the regional title last year.
"That's by far our best score of the year," Lakeland coach Mario Maddy said. "They beat us out last year, at Sandpoint Elks. Last year we started playing match play - when they hit a good shot, you try to hit a good shot. This year, we focused on not playing the person, but playing the course, and letting the scores be what they are at the end."
Lakeland's Haley Rotchford carded a 82 to take home medalist honors and the Hawks won the team event by 65 strokes.
Both Lakeland teams advance to state, which will be held at The Links next Monday and Tuesday. Lakeland was the only one of the three teams to qualify anyone for state.
Andrew Knight and Tyrel Derrick each shot 75 for Lakeland. Jack Reeves of Sandpoint shot 76, missing state by one shot.
On the girls side, Rotchford got help from Megan Cysewski (88), Madeline Neff (94) and Sierra Tingey (96).
"I think that (360) is a school record," Maddy said.
