FRANK: Gifted problem solver
Wednesday morning I was saddened to learn of the death of Frank Henderson. I served as Kootenai County Commissioner for a time with Frank and Evelyn Adams. When I was elected to office, I ran as a Democrat and both Frank and Evelyn were Republicans. Knowing about political campaigns and subsequently holding an office, there was a certain apprehension on my part as to how things would operate at the county level. On Wednesday morning following the election, I received a call from Frank congratulating me on my victory. He said my term would begin in January but I was more than welcome to come down to the office and meet the staff and be present at any meetings they would hold. I could not vote but I was more than welcome to join in the discussions.
I was teaching at Coeur d’Alene High School on the double shift, so my class schedule would allow me to attend some of the meetings. The next morning I went to my new “office” before my classes started and was very pleased with my reception. I even had an office with a desk and chair and telephone.
I found out very early in the game that Frank Henderson was a gentlemen and there to serve the people of Kootenai County. Frank was most willing to help me understand the problems we would be facing and asked for my input into possible solutions to the decisions we would be making.
We quickly divided up responsibilities for the various departments of county government. Each took the areas we were knowledgeable about or had some interest in. Whenever there was a decision to be made, or an issue to resolve, I found my input was quickly acknowledged and sought.
I asked myself what happened to the “R” and “D” status that was present a few months earlier. Frank told me one day that we are now working to solve problems and not create them. A lesson that many elected officials do not seem to follow these days. I went to him many times for advice and always paid heed to what he had to say.
During my 80 years of life I have had the opportunity to work with many people. When it comes to politics, I would put Frank Henderson high on the list of those who are there to truly serve the people and try their best to improve situations for the community. When Frank Henderson retired from political activity, it was a great loss and with his passing it is now an even greater one.
