CHAMPIONS: Boys expressed character

| March 18, 2015 9:00 PM

Our local high schools have Prairie Pig and Fight for the Fish. Our middle schools have Minnow Madness. This past weekend we watched another emotional game play out when two third- and fourth-grade Hayden Parks and Recreation teams took the court.

By the game’s half, the Hayden Vision Source team had secured a lead that made it clear which team would win the game. With little more to lose, our team’s coaches spoke to the Hayden Vision Source coach, and explained that we have a handful of young players who had not made a basket in game play all season.

They asked for kindness, and Hayden Vision Source graciously delivered. The game continued, but with certain players not being guarded as aggressively. They scored their baskets, and in the process also scored one for personal confidence.

If the Parks and Recreation Department awards a prize for good sportsmanship, my vote goes to the Hayden Vision Source team. The character these young boys expressed in the game this weekend is the true heart of a champion.
