Tribute to triumphant Trojans
What the Post Falls High School boys basketball team did this season, capped by a state championship Saturday night, can be described in a multitude of ways.
Exhilarating. Inspiring. Superb.
These boys were a lot of things, but one thing they were not: Boooooooooring.
Back in mid-January, a real estate blog called Movoto.com named Post Falls the second-most boring city in Idaho. Only Ammon, just outside Idaho Falls, was deemed a duller burg than our River City.
While many a PF resident noted that a slower pace, fewer distractions and more focus on family aren't altogether unattractive assets, the boring title stung. It might have hurt just a little more because Coeur d'Alene was named the second most interesting city in Idaho.
Apparently, that kind of excitement didn't translate to the basketball court. Both Lake City and Coeur d'Alene high schools watched from afar as Post Falls ran the postseason table, finishing with a flourish in its thrilling overtime win against Highland of Pocatello.
Post Falls played an almost perfect season, racking up 25 wins against just one loss - to Washington powerhouse Wilson of Tacoma early in the season. Its championship was the school's second in six years and fourth in program history. And this one immediately followed the Post Falls High School wrestling team's first state title.
Before the last of the ticker tape settles on Seltice, we'd like to offer a curtain call to these true champions. Playing fundamentally sound basketball as a team - and we mean that literally, because one of Post Falls' greatest strengths was the fact that every player on the roster contributed to this exhilarating, inspiring, superb season - the foundation of excellence has been laid by Coach Mike McLean. McLean, who once suited up for these Trojans, has established himself as the region's top boys basketball coach, and he would without question be in any conversation about top high school coaches of any sport in Idaho.
The Press applauds the Post Falls Trojans for their historic sprint to another state title. If this is boring, our hearts aren't equipped for excitement.
