Get to know your senior center

| March 4, 2015 8:00 PM

What do you think when someone says senior center?

Does your mind go to the image of older people (older than you) sitting around playing games with loud noises, along with eating really bad food and music you can't understand?

You should change your mind. You really need to stop by and check out our senior centers today. They are not what they use to be back in the day.

Today's centers are fun, exciting and action-packed. They are a location that you can come to where you are going to be known, loved and welcomed with open arms. Centers today also are very active, with exercise classes, educational classes, and bingo. They are a place to volunteer, find friendship and get involved in senior fun.

You need to know you don't have to be 55 to be involved; anyone can come to the center and get involved where volunteers are always welcomed. We are also your local community center, in which we can help with many different resources that will help guide you down the path of life. We are always encouraging our seniors to bring in their kids, grandkids, other family members and friends to learn how to help you with any medical issues, pre-planning and understanding what to do once you retire, or just if feel like you need some interaction with others.

Did you know the Post Falls Senior Center is adding new programs this spring and would like to welcome you to join in? For the past few years the center has worked hard to get the word out about the happenings there, because we hear from people that have not stopped by that the center has really bland food, "it's not for me, and I am not that old." However, if you come in, you will see that we are welcoming, encouraging and want to see you get involved and have fun. We always have coffee on, and you might even find a little homemade snack or more. We have an amazing salad bar, coffee bar, and really amazing dinners along with dessert, for a suggested donation of $4 per person 60 and older.

Some of the activities include Movie Mondays, where our seniors and guests can come to watch a movie and enjoy a little popcorn, soda and fellowship with others. Many seniors sit in their homes all alone, and this way we can have a gathering with others that might have one or two things in common, and maybe develop a new friendship. We also have bingo, dancing and card games, you just need to check out our schedule of events on our webpage, www.postfallsseniorcenter.org.

We have many different resources available such our community resource room with flyers, booklets and more that might be able to answer many questions you or your loved one would have. We have a Medicare councilor onsite to help you with questions regarding your medical plans; and we offer many different educational classes, such as pre-planning your funeral, long-term care planning, financial matters and more. We can even help you answer those questions that you might have and could not find the right person or business to help you or your family. If you don't ask, you will never know the answer. We are here for you!

Please plan to get to know your local senior center, and remember to make time to stop by the Post Falls Senior Center to see all the improvements we have made and will be making this year.

We also encourage donations to help keep senior centers alive, we are a 501(c)(3) nonprofit if you have any questions or concerns please email us at [email protected] or call (208) 773-9582.
