NIC men's soccer team off to 2-0 start
- COLLEGE MEN'S SOCCER
SPRINGFIELD, Ore. - Tony Quesnell's free kick from 27 yards out capped the scoring as North Idaho College beat Clark College of Vancouver, Wash., 3-1 as part of a weekend of friendlies in the Eugene area involving Northwest Athletic Conference teams.
"Tony's free kick was right on the mark," NIC coach Ken Thompson said. "Braden (Ridgewell) put himself in an offside position just before the kick, the keeper was preoccupied with Braden, and Tony bent it up and around the wall to the near post."
Jorge Carmona scored his second goal in two days for NIC (2-0-0).
"Our goalkeeping was good both days from all three guys," Thompson said. "We were a little more physical in the midfield."
NIC plays host to Whitworth in an exhibition Tuesday at 4 p.m. at Eisenwinter Field.
First half - 1, NIC, Jorge Carmona (Alec Maldonado), 12:00. Second half - 2, Clark, John Yoon (Ian Schimandle), 52:00. 3, NIC, own goal, 54:00. 4, NIC, Tony Quesnell (free kick), 76:00.
Shots on goal - NIC 10, Clark 4.
Saves - NIC, Tanner Horton 2, Mitch Markovetz 1, Garrett Boyce 1; Clark, Miguel Flores 5.
WOMEN'S SOCCER
Clark 2
SPRINGFIELD, Ore. - The Cardinals gave up a goal on a free kick and a defensive miscue in their second game of the NWAC friendlies at Willamalane Sports Center.
"It was an even match everywhere except on the scoreboard," NIC coach Dan Hogan said. "(Ellie) Quercia scored on a free kick from the top of the penalty area and Ruiz ran onto a through pass when the two NIC centerbacks were uncertain which would step to intercept the pass. These are the reasons we play preseason games and I think the team will learn more from this game than the win against Tacoma on Saturday."
Megan Lowery had a goal called back on a "controversial" offside call, Hogan said, and Corinne Ariss put the ball just over the crossbar in the second half.
NIC plays Peninsula College on Friday in Port Angeles, Wash.
First half - 1, Clark, Ellie Quercia (unassisted), 20:00. Second half - 2, Clark, Megan Bloom (Daisy Risueno), 49:00.
Shots on goal - NIC 5, Clark 4.
Saves - NIC, Tiegan Horton 1, Cassy Van Der Mey 0. Clark, Carla Ruiz 3, Shelby Kennedy 1.
