Motorist killed in collision with train
ELMIRA - A motorist was fatally injured Tuesday in a collision with a Union Pacific Railroad train at an at-grade crossing.
Idaho State Police said James R. Lee was eastbound on Elmira Road when he failed to stop for the train. The northbound locomotive struck the passenger side of his Lee's Ford F-250 pickup truck.
Lee, a 67-year-old from Auburn, Calif., was extricated from the vehicle and evacuated to a landing zone at the Samuels Store. He was flown by helicopter to Kootenai Health, where he succumbed to his injuries, state police said.
Lee was wearing a seat belt, ISP said.
The crash happened at 5:22 p.m. on the Union Pacific line, which is located a short distance east of the BNSF Railway line. The crossing where Lee's vehicle was struck was south of the at-grade crossing where a motorist was struck by an oncoming train in November 2014.
