PREP GIRLS SOCCER: Hague, Roop guide Vikings past Bulldogs in season opener

| August 23, 2015 9:00 PM

SANDPOINT — Long-range blasts by Kinzie Hague and Cydney Roop both found the back of the net less than a minute apart in the first half, helping lead the Coeur d’Alene Vikings to a 4-2 nonleague win over the Sandpoint Bulldogs in season opener for both at Pine St. Field.

Megan Drake added a goal and two assists for the Vikings, who trailed 2-1 early in the first half before turning the tide with the two quick goals from more than 25 yards out.

“It was a little shaky at first, but we made some progress and we’re starting to get it,” said Vikings coach Andy Vredenburg, praising the energy of Drake. “She was awesome today. She created a lot of chances and was part of everything.”

The reigning two-time state 4A champion Bulldogs got on the board first when freshman Riley Walkington converted a penalty kick. Drake answered two minutes later, before Rachel Meyer gave the Bulldogs a 2-1 lead after beating the keeper and slotting a shot into the open net.

Sandpoint coach Conor Baranski said there were some positives and negatives, not uncommon in an opener, but still likes where his team is at early in the season.

“That was a winnable game, and that’s frustrating,” he said. “But we’re farther now than our opener last year.”

Sandpoint hosts Lake City on Thursday. Coeur d’Alene travels to Moscow on Saturday.
