Firefighters tackle Wylie Peak fire

SANDPOINT - Firefighters are working to contain a small fire burning approximately a mile south of Wylie Peak in north-central Bonner County, according to the U.S. Forest Service.

The Wylie Fire is burning in dense forest with a significant amount of dead standing timber and snags.

The fire poses no significant threat to structures, private property or natural resources, the Forest Service said on Monday.

It's approximately 25 acres in size and 12 firefighters are working to confine the blaze using natural barriers, roads and a small amount of fire line construction, according an update posted to InciWeb, an online incident information system.

The fire was sparked in the past several weeks by a lightning strike but has only recently begun to spread, the Forest Service said in a press release. Smoke from the fire is visible in the Sandpoint area and has drifted north to within several miles of Bonners Ferry.

Hot spots are expected to remain until rain or snow fully extinguishes the fire this fall.
