USDA - Forest Service Idaho Panhandle National Forests St. Joe Ranger District Latah County, Idaho The St. Joe Ranger District of the Idaho Panhandle National Forests is seeking comments on activities proposed on National Forest System lands in 281 Gulch and Garnet Gulch, at the Emerald Creek Garnet Area (T42N, R1E, Boise Meridian). The project has been identified as the Emerald Creek Garnet Area Improvement Project. Primary objectives of the proposal are to 1) keep the public sluicing operations at the current location in 281 Gulch, 2) improve conditions at this site, and 3) truck garnet gravels from Garnet Gulch to the public sifting and sluicing site in 281 Gulch. Under this proposal, the following activities would occur: Construct a road from Road 447 in Garnet Gulch up to 281 Gulch (0.9 miles), to be used only for a few weeks in the year to truck garnet gravels to the current sluicing site Widen existing Road 281 to accommodate two lanes of traffic or a single lane of traffic with turnouts Develop a parking area nearer to the garnet area Improvements in the public screening and sluicing area and picnic areas. Replace the portable toilets currently on site with permanent vaulted toilets on concrete pads o Construct a concrete floor and improve the permit sales building in its current location The St. Joe Ranger district is inviting your comments concerning this proposal.
