Lake City dashes past Central Valley

SPOKANE VALLEY — The sprinklers came on briefly in the third quarter Friday night at Central Valley High, but it was way too late to cool off the speedy Lake City offense.

Senior Connor Newby scored all four of his touchdowns and fellow senior Jerry Louie-McGee put on another show as Lake City scored 50 first-half points and walloped the Central Valley Bears of the Greater Spokane League 57-21 in nonleague high school football at Sig T. Hansen Field.

“I feel like we were a lot faster, and more up-tempo,” Newby said. “I feel like they couldn’t hang with the speed of our players.”

Newby caught a 15-yard touchdown pass from Michael Goggin just 2 minutes, 39 seconds into the game for Lake City (3-0), and he scored on TD runs of 2, 25 and 10 in the second quarter.

Louie-McGee returned an interception 35 yards for a touchdown and a 14-0 Lake City lead. He took a swing pass in the right flat from Goggin and zipped 69 yards for a 21-7 lead after one quarter. After Central Valley (0-2) muffed a punt, Louie-McGee swept in from 1 yard out late in the second quarter for a 50-14 halftime lead. 

Early in the third quarter — shortly before the sprinklers interrupted play — Louie-McGee picked off a deep pass down the sideline by Tanner Sloan, and nearly returned it the distance, before being tackled at the Bears’ 1.

“We’re excited about our football team,” Lake City coach Van Troxel said. “Coming in to the game, we needed to not worry about who we were playing; we need to continue to get better. I feel good about our guys; we came to compete.”

Lake City did have three turnovers in the first half, two of which led to Central Valley scores. CV finished with five turnovers, the T-Wolves four.

Lake City, ranked third in 5A in the state media poll, outgained Central Valley 469-222, the third straight game the T-Wolves totaled more than 400 yards of offense. Newby rushed for 101 yards on 12 carries as Lake City ran for 332 yards. Louie-McGee added 62 yards on five carries, Goggin 57 yards on eight carries, and Kirk McKenzie ran for 59 yards on nine carries, including a 6-yard TD run in the third quarter.

Sloan, under pressure much of the night, was 13 of 35 for 128 yards and three interceptions. Lake City senior Walker Jones was a frequent visitor to the Central Valley pocket, and he and Sam Slusser both slammed into Sloan on a pass play late in the first half, resulting in a duck intercepted by Scott Helsper.

Drew Shipley’s fumble recovery early in the second quarter led to Newby’s first TD run, a 2-yard score that made it 28-7 Lake City.

Central Valley lost at second-ranked Coeur d’Alene 50-14 last week.

Lake City plays host to Shadle Park of the GSL next Friday.
