POST FALLS - Erica Simpson had a hat trick for the Trojans, but a penalty kick by Trudi Timperman gave the Bullpups the lead for good in nonleague play.

Timperman scored in the 37th minute for a 3-2 halftime lead. The head referee ruled that a Post Falls player interefered with a shot attempt by a Bullpups player as she made a tackle.

Timperman converted the penalty kick, then she tacked on another goal four minutes into the second half for a 4-2 lead. Simpson countered with a goal with five minutes left in the game, but the Trojans (2-2) fell short.

"That's his judgment, you can't change that," Post Falls coach Sarah Stevens said of the referee. "We had several opportunities that we failed to make. We had open shots and opportunities that we didn't capitalize on. On the flip side, they took advantage where we weren't smart and they capitalized on their opportunities."

Simpson also scored the first goal of the game on an assist by Alli Crain.

"Erica had a good game," Stevens said. "Even though she had a good game, as great a competitor as she is, she's not going to be happy we didn't get out of there with a win."

Post Falls plays at Lakeland at 10 a.m. on Saturday.
