For the first time since 2009, Inland Empire League football teams get to square off against their counterparts from the Greater Spokane League.

Coeur d'Alene plays host to Central Valley tonight, and plays Ferris at Albi Stadium in Spokane next Friday.

Lake City is home vs. Lewis and Clark tonight, plays at Central Valley next Friday, then hosts Shadle Park on Sept. 19.

Post Falls scheduled one GSL foe - University, which visits the Trojans on Sept. 12.

This week marks the season opener for high school football teams in Washington. Idaho schools have the advantage of having played a game last week.

In general, the GSL is said to be young this year, with much of the talent in the junior class.

Central Valley (0-0) at Coeur d'Alene (1-0): The Vikings opened with a 26-13 victory at Skyline of Idaho Falls last week.

Central Valley, 5-5 last year, brings some familiar names to Coeur d'Alene tonight. Junior quarterback Tanner Sloan is the son of former CV and Idaho quarterback Rick Sloan, who is the Bears' offensive coordinator and boys basketball coach.

Sophomore linebacker Travis Hawkins is the son of Coeur d'Alene native Ron Hawkins, who played quarterback on Gonzaga Prep's state title team in 1986. And sophomore placekicker Ryan Rehkow is the brother of Idaho kicker and former CV standout Austin Rehkow.

Lewis and Clark (0-0) at Lake City (1-0): These teams met in 2008, Lewis and Clark winning 39-0 at Lake City. Lake City opened last week with a thrilling 39-37 victory at Rocky Mountain of Meridian.

Lewis and Clark's QB is junior Jordan Summers, who played briefly in three games last year for the Tigers, who finished 4-6.

Post Falls (1-0) at Skyview (0-1): Post Falls won 42-39 at Sandpoint last Friday. The next day, Skyview of Nampa lost 48-40 to Mojave (Nev.) High at the Rocky Mountain Rumble in Pocatello. The Hawks are ranked third in 4A in this week's Idaho media poll.

West Valley (0-0) at Lakeland (1-0): The Hawks opened with an impressive 24-10 victory at Lewiston last week. Lakeland and West Valley last played in 2011, West Valley winning 35-28 at Rathdrum.

Riverside (0-0) at Timberlake (1-0): The Tigers opened with a 48-27 win over Frenchtown (Mont.) in Missoula. Timberlake beat Riverside 27-14 last year at the Kibbie Dome in Moscow.

St. Maries (1-0) at Freeman (0-0): The Lumberjacks routed Kellogg 41-0 in their opener. St. Maries and Freeman last played in 2011, the Scotties winning 46-0 at home.

Kootenai (0-0) at Clark Fork (1-0): This is a league game in the new, combined, 1A Division II White Star League. Clark Fork opened last week with a 52-8 win over Lewis County at the Kibbie Dome, as Brandan Bowen rushed for six touchdowns and also returned two interceptions for scores. Kootenai is the lone local team not to play last week.

Lakeside (0-1) at Kendrick (0-1): This is the White Star League opener for both teams. Lakeside lost 76-0 to 1A Division I Oakley last week, while Kendrick lost 40-8 at home to 1A Division I Genesee.
