Esquivel's goal lifts Post Falls past Sandpoint

POST FALLS - Roberto Esquivel scored the tiebreaking goal in the 70th minute to propel Post Falls to a 2-1 victory over Sandpoint in nonleague play Tuesday.

"Today I was very pleased with the way the boys played; they possessed the ball and shifted together very well and remained focused the whole game," Post Falls coach John Mueller. "We really started making some combination passes that worked well with our formation, creating more goal-scoring opportunities. We have some work to do in order to round out all aspects of our play, but I am glad we were able to come out of a tough game showing we can be successful, while also realizing where we still need to improve."

Post Falls (2-0-1) plays host to Northwest Christian on Saturday.

Sandpoint dipped to 1-3-0.

MOSCOW - Jack Barrett recorded a hat trick to lead the Timberwolves past the Bears in a nonleague match at Oylear Field.

"You never know what kind of match you're going to get on the first day of school," Lake City coach Chad Beadell said. "It was a long bus ride, but the kids got off the bus ready to play. We had a good gameplan and stuck with it and all the guys came out and played really well."

Alec Maldanado had two goals for Lake City (2-0), which hosts Lakeland on Thursday.

The win gives Beadell 101 career wins at Lake City.

"It's kind of crazy," said Beadell, in his 10th season as Timberwolves coach. "I started hearing that, and started thinking about the last nine years, and I don't play the games, but all the kids that have contributed to it and the special memories over the last nine years. It's a lot more special that way. It's been a lot of fun."

"I like seeing the young freshmen and sophomores and coming together in our system of play," Timberlake coach Steve Michael said. "Our juniors and seniors have provided great leadership."

On Thursday, Timberlake (3-0, 3-0 IML) hosts Lakeland, and Bonners Ferry hosts Coeur d'Alene Charter.
