GRAVE: Don't sell cemetery

| October 29, 2014 9:00 PM

In Thursday’s Press, the article about the cemetery rate increases: I do think that the city should not lose any money on the grave sites, but as Mr. Wolfe wants it to be for a profit, I would ask, a profit for whom?

A person comes into this world with nothing and leaves with nothing. In between they have to pay and pay for everything, so somebody can make a profit — government, doctors, lawyers, merchants and the list goes on. It seems to me that at least when someone dies, they should be allowed to go with a little dignity, with at least one area not trying to make a profit. I do know that if the cemetery were to go to a private corporation we would be paying a lot more for the service than we are now.

Has our society become so callous? Couldn’t the funds that the cemetery takes in be put in a fund just for the cemetery? Then if there is a shortfall they could raise rates to compensate. If there is a profit the funds could be used for improvements. I do hope that the City Council would not consider selling to a private company.
