DEER: Numbers are growing
I sympathize with the residents of Dalton Gardens, though they are not alone in their plight with white-tailed deer. Here in Nettleton Gulch we have quite a herd with as many as 18 in a group at a time. At this moment I can see nine feeding on plants in my yard.
Having lived here in the Gulch a long time, we are seeing the numbers swell as the females birth between two and three fauns per doe due to the supply of good non-native forage. I have contacted Fish and Game but they seem to have no desire to approach the problem, which I believe is within their purview. Having spent a lot of money fencing and planting supposed deer-proof plants I believe some solution should be considered before disease overtakes the population that has swelled to an unnatural concentration in the Coeur d’Alene area.
