Charter, Timberlake girls to play for title
• 3A GIRLS
TWIN FALLS — Timberlake’s state 3A girls soccer semifinal game Friday couldn’t have started much worse.
A shot by Amanda Batchelor of McCall-Donnelly less than two minutes into the game was misplayed by a Tigers defender, and the ball caromed into the goal for a Vandals score.
“We’re looking at each other like, ‘What just happened?’” Tim-berlake coach Steve Michael said.
But Allison Kirby tied it for Timberlake in the 22nd minute, and that was it for the scoring. The game went to penalty kicks, and the Tigers made all five to McCall-Donnelly’s four, and Timberlake beat the three-time defending champions at the Sunway Soccer Complex to advance to the championship game for the first time in the seven-year history of the program.
“It’s funny; we read a paper down here (in Twin Falls), and they referred to Timberlake as the unknown team from the north,” Michael said. “They’ll know who we are now.”
Timberlake (12-4-1) will play fellow Intermountain League foe Coeur d’Alene Charter Academy (16-2-1) for the state title today at 1 p.m. PDT.
Shelby Starr, Kirby, “Biffy” Shuster, Kodi Anderson and Kyla Trumble scored in the shootout for Charter. McCall-Donnelly missed its first PK in the shootout. Trumble’s PK, to the lower right-hand side of the goal, won it.
Kirby beat the Vandals keeper from some 12 yards out for the tying goal.
“Allison took it from 45 yards out, went through three or four defensive players, pretty much muscled her way through and scored,” Michael said. “That’s the way she plays.”
Michael also praised the play of goalkeeper Courtney Sutton, who made several key saves in the second half, survived a handful of collisions and a shot to the gut that briefly knocked the wind out of her.
“But she held her own,” Michael said. “She was not going to come out of the game.”
Coeur d’Alene Charter blanked Timberlake twice in league play, but Timberlake beat Charter 1-0 last week in the District 1-2 title game.
First half — 1, McD, Amanda Batchelor (unassisted), 1:30. 2, TL, Allison Kirby (unassisted), 22:00. Second half — none.

TWIN FALLS — The Panthers dubbed their state 3A semifinal as “Step-Up Friday.”
Done.
Brooklyn Cunningham scored an unassisted goal in the 22nd minute, then assisted on another a little over a minute later, as Coeur d’Alene Charter beat the Russets at the Sunway Soccer Complex to advance to the program’s first state championship match in only its third year.
Coeur d’Alene (16-2-1) will face Intermountain League rival Timberlake (12-4-1) in today’s championship match at 1 p.m. PDT at the Sunway Soccer Complex.
“We called today ‘Step-Up Friday’ and challenged the team to score early and get more names on the score sheet,” Coeur d’Alene Charter coach Dave Baxter said. “Brooklyn took the challenge, played an outstanding game against one of the stingiest defenses in 3A.”
Alexis Taylor, who normally plays defender, was moved to wing and scored her first goal for Charter in the 23rd minute.
“I am very proud of how we competed in all phases today,” Baxter said. “I am looking forward to an all-North Idaho tilt tomorrow.”
Shelley will face McCall-Donnelly in the third-place match today.
First half — 1, Charter, Brooklyn Cunningham (unassisted), 22:22. 2, Charter, Alexis Taylor (Cunningham), 23:45. Second half — none.

IDAHO FALLS — Missing players and goal-scoring chances, the Lake City Timberwolves came up short in a bid to reach the state 5A championship game for the second time in three years.
Emily Rigsby scored two goals for the Boise Braves, which beat the Timberwolves in the semifinals at the Idaho Falls Soccer Complex.
Lake City (15-3-1), playing without starters Maddi Ward, who received a red card in Thursday’s first-round win over Eagle, and Alissa Jolliff, who was injured in that game, took the lead on a goal from Havana Johnson in the 26th minute.
“For big parts of the game, we were right there,” Lake City coach Matt Ruchti said. “The kids played their hearts out, but we just didn’t have a lot of luck. They battled, but we hit the crossbar four times. They had similar opportunities and put them in, and we had the same, and they hit the crossbar.”
Boise (20-0-1) will face Centennial today in the championship game.
“It was one of those days,” Ruchti said. “We played hard for every minute. We’re going to work hard and try to win a trophy tomorrow.”
Lake City, the 2012 state champ, faces Rocky Mountain of Meridian today in the third-place match at noon.

IDAHO FALLS — A day after a disappointing loss to Centennial High, Lake City coach Chad Beadell didn’t have to say much to his kids to get them motivated to play on Friday morning.
His kids did all the talking on the field.
Lake City held Madison to only two shots on goal in a loser-out victory in the state 5A tournament at the Idaho Falls Soccer Complex.
“You just never know what you’re going to get in games like this,” Beadell said. “The guys gave their heart and soul yesterday (Thursday), but I was very impressed with them and really took it to them.”
Ryan Swallow, Koby Murphree and Shay Hannigan-Luther had goals for Lake City (16-1), which faces Idaho Falls (11-4-4) in today’s consolation championship match at 9 a.m.
“I really didn’t need to say much because we’ve got seven seniors that sat and watched the film from the Centennial game last night,” Beadell said. “They wanted to see what they did right, and what they did wrong, and it just shows how much they’ve grown up. They take criticism in a really good way, and that’s what you hope for as a coach.”
Madison of Rexburg finishes 10-9-2.
First half — 1, LC, Ryan Swallow (penalty kick), 15:30. 2, LC, Koby Murphree (Devon Hoffman), 35:00. Second half — 3, LC, Shay Hannigan-Luther (Max Mularski), 43:00. 4, Mad, Nate Price (unassisted), 79:00.
