LEWISTON - For the second straight Saturday, the Coeur d'Alene Vikings sent someone else home disappointed at Walker Field.

Only this time, it also clinched the team's first state tournament appearance since 2009.

Sarah Lambert scored two goals, including the game winner in the third minute of a golden goal overtime, to put the Vikings past the Timberline Wolves of Boise 2-1 in a state 5A tournament play-in game on Saturday.

"It's an awesome feeling," second-year Coeur d'Alene coach Andy Vredenburg said. "The girls totally deserve it. They gave everything they had. It was an amazing match, and our back line played outstanding today."

Fruitland 1 (SO)

LEWISTON - The Coeur d'Alene Charter Panthers outlasted the Fruitland Grizzlies into the seventh round of the shootout, when a shot sailed wide right, and sent the third-year program to state for the second straight season.

Coeur d'Alene Charter made six of seven shots in the shootout. Panther goalkeeper Jackie Jensen saved Fruitland's second shot and a Grizzly shot missed wide right in the seventh, giving the game to Coeur d'Alene Charter.

"The way these girls recovered after our poor play in Thursday's defeat speaks volumes about their character and strength," Coeur d'Alene Charter coach Dave Baxter said. "This was a fast, hard-fought, physical game against a talented team that was ready to exploit any mistake. I could not be prouder of this team."

Mountain View 3

Post Falls 2 (OT)

LEWISTON - Ten seconds from a state 5A tournament berth, the Post Falls Trojans had it slip away.

Andrew Coltharp scored with 10 seconds remaining in regulation, then Dante Pannell scored a golden goal 4:21 into overtime as the Mavericks of Meridian downed the Trojans in a state 5A tournament play-in match at Walker Field.

Post Falls took a 2-1 lead in the 72nd minute on a goal by Diego Esquivel after Cole Sullivan had evened the score in the 44th for Post Falls.

"This game truly could have gone either way," first-year Post Falls coach John Mueller said. "Our boys fought back from being down 1-0 to being up 2-1 and then in the last 10 seconds of stoppage time, we were scored on. When it came to overtime, both teams desperately wanted it and it was just a matter of time before one team got that 'golden touch' to score."

Post Falls finishes 8-8-1.

"Overall, I couldn't be more proud of my team," Mueller said. "They have proven to be gentlemen in victory and defeat."

Fruitland 4

Timberlake 3

LEWISTON - The Timberlake Tigers - in their first year in program history - nearly dug themselves out of a 4-0 hole to advance to the state 3A tournament.

But in the end, it was a little too far to dig.

Kendall Fletcher scored two goals for the Fruitland Grizzlies, which beat the Tigers 4-3 in a play-in game at Walker Field, ending Timberlake's season at 9-4-3.

"We dug ourselves a pretty deep hole," Timberlake coach Bert Bentley said. "About 10 minutes into the game, there was a very serious injury (a Fruitland player suffered a fractured leg) and when we got back to playing, we might have been a little timid. We finally got some confidence, but they might have had some speed on us."

Sophomore Cody Bentley had two goals and an assist - finishing the season with 37 goals - for Timberlake.

"This is a great group of guys," Bentley said. "I'm pretty happy with how the kids played. Fruitland was a much better team than we expected them to be. We were so close to winning that district title.

"To come up short down there is disappointing, but I'm sure we'll have a great team next year."

Fruitland opens the state tournament against Sugar-Salem on Thursday at the Sunway Soccer Complex in Twin Falls.
