PREP GIRLS SOCCER ROUNDUP: Vikings upset Bengals, will face T-Wolves for state bid
LEWISTON - Maybe it was the wind?
Or a good bend on the corner kick.
Whatever it was, the third-seeded Coeur d'Alene Vikings will play another day thanks to it.
Freshman Kylie Hanson scored on a corner kick in the 30th minute, and goalkeeper Julia Roach had 11 saves as the Vikings beat the second-seeded Lewiston Bengals 2-1 in the 5A Region 1 tournament on Saturday at Walker Field.
Coeur d'Alene (8-5-1) travel to top-seeded Lake City in the regional championship match on Wednesday at 3:30 at the Irma Anderl Soccer Complex.
"Kylie took the corner kick and it went straight at the keeper," Coeur d'Alene coach Andy Vredenburg said. "It was a little rainy and the ball flew right over her head. It was either some bend, or the wind, but it went right off the back post. I'm really proud of the girls. It's tough to play in Lewiston. Every single one of them got off the bus and gave everything they had."
Lewiston finishes 12-4.

COEUR d'ALENE - Natalie Wheelock scored two first-half goals, both coming off corner kicks from Caitlin Barber, to lead the top-seeded Timberwolves past the fourth seed Trojans in the opening round of the 5A Region 1 tournament at the Irma Anderl Soccer Complex.
"Natalie made a great play on both," Lake City coach Matt Ruchti said. "She can be a great player out of the air and Caitlin did a great job of finding her."
On Tuesday, the teams played to a 4-4 draw in Post Falls.
"We struggled the other day against them, and knew today was going to be a battle," Ruchti said. "The kids had a good mindset and came to battle. They had the right mentality and played great as a unit and were successful."

SANDPOINT - The Bulldogs exploded for three first-half goals, notching the biggest result of the season in a nonleague win over the Bullpups at Pine St. Field.
Nan Kiebert, Riley Couch and Caroline Suppiger each scored a goal in a 17-minute span of the first half, as the Bulldogs (5-8-2) picked up some momentum for the 4A Region 1 tournament with a win over a Greater Spokane League power.
Paige Dumars stopped eight shots in goal, and Corrine Ariss and Madi Schoening showed they're among the top defensive duos in the state by shutting down the attack of Gonzaga Prep (6-4). NBA Hall of Fame point guard and Gonzaga Prep alumni John Stockton was on hand to watch his daughter Laura play.
Earlier this week, Laura verbally committed to play basketball at Gonzaga.
Sandpoint head coach Conor Baranski was thrilled with his team's performance.
"That first half was some of the best soccer we've played. G-Prep is good, and all three of our goals were top notch," said Sandpoint coach Conor Baranski, whose team lost 3-0 to the Bullpups last year en route to a state 4A title. "It was a fantastic performance. Hopefully we can take that momentum into Thursday."
