Mayor: Man in custody when he stabbed himself

IDAHO FALLS (AP) - Information continues to emerge in eastern Idaho about events leading to the death of a man in police custody.

Blackfoot Mayor Paul Loomis said 28-year-old Kyle Eddington was in custody and handcuffed when he stabbed himself with a knife.

Eddington died Aug. 1 but the Blackfoot Police Department has released almost no information until a statement Tuesday.

Police say an officer checking storage units detained Eddington after learning he was on probation.

Officers then searched Eddington's home.

Police say they planned to search a storage unit also but Eddington grabbed a knife from the kitchen and stabbed himself. Eddington later died at Bingham Memorial Hospital.
