Coeur d'Alene falls at Sandpoint

SANDPOINT - Junior guard Madi Schoening missed just one shot on the night, scoring 31 points to lead the Sandpoint Bulldogs to a 64-37 victory over the Coeur d'Alene Vikings on Tuesday night in nonleague girls basketball at Les Rogers Court.

Schoening was 11 of 11 from the field, and 7 of 8 from the line, to go with five steals for the Bulldogs (2-1), who backed up an overtime win over Lake City last Friday at home.

Schoening now has 85 points in her first three games, coming against the likes of Coeur d'Alene, Lake City and Post Falls.

Freshman Grace Kirscher added 17 points, eight boards and four assists.

Madisen Scholwinski posted 12 points and seven rebounds and Emily Callahan scored 11 for the Vikings (2-1), who lost their top six players from last year's state 5A title team.

It was Sandpoint's first victory over Coeur d'Alene since the 2003-04 season - the year before Dale Poffenroth took over as Vikings coach.

"His kids played really well," Poffenroth said. "I thought Grace (Kirscher) had a great game."

Sandpoint head coach Duane Ward said the Post Falls loss gave his team confidence, and they're playing together and getting to know their roles.

"They're starting to learn how to play basketball," Ward said, "recognizing open lanes, when to cut, keeping your spacing."

Coeur d'Alene returns to action Dec. 5 at Shadle Park.
