Idaho State Police trooper collides with elk

KETCHUM (AP) - An Idaho State Police patrol vehicle sustained about $1,500 in damage in a central Idaho collision with an elk.

Trooper Dan Choma wasn't injured when his 2011 Chevrolet Tahoe collided with a cow elk at 7:40 a.m. Wednesday.

The collision occurred on State Highway 75 south of Ketchum near East Fork Road.

Blaine County Sheriff Gene Ramsey said the elk wandered onto the highway and died on impact when Choma couldn't stop in time.

Ramsey said it's another reminder that elk are moving and motorists need to pay attention, especially at dawn and dusk.
