CARTOON: Don't chase materialism

| March 30, 2014 9:00 PM

Regarding the editorial cartoon in Friday’s paper about science education: I am a Christian homeschooler who excels at math and science. Being a Christian does not affect my understanding of how acids and bases react, or biological processes — such as how plants make sugar. I just know that God made it all. In my home, education is valued and the children are taught to appreciate the opportunity of an education. Also, a moral framework is part of my schooling. I am being prepared to be a good citizen of my country, not just to get a good paying job.

In contrast, most public education is void of any moral framework. The emphasis of encouraging college readiness is all about money — go to school so you can make money. Recently, I overheard a conversation between my “peers,” high school students talking about their chemistry class. One planned to flunk, because she didn’t like the class. Another was willing to put in minimal effort to pass the class. The tragedy involving the Samuel family is another example of the need for basic guidance in right and wrong. The students of my generation deserve more than a materialistic ideology.
